Afropolis was originally published as the catalog for an exhibition of the same name sponsored by the Goethe Institute and other German institutions so the original articles were mostly in German. The current edition, published again with German support, is in English. As one might expect from an exhibition catalog, the books's strongest sections are the short but richly illustrated reports by artists and their associates in Cairo, Lagos, Kinshasa and Johannesburg, which document projects from formal art works to the rehabilitation of neglected buildings or waste materials.

The longer articles that are presumably intended to provide context and background for non-expert readers are rather uneven and mostly culled from earlier publications whose data may no longer describe these cities, which have been subject to rapid transformation in the last generation
